health update

We had our appt. on Thursday with the lung specialist for Sophie. It was very informative & helpful, so we are really glad we were able to go. What the doctor thinks is going on is that Sophie is still dealing with the after effects of a bad cold she had in December. Her lung x-rays (which she didn't even cry when getting them taken!!!) showed some mucus in her airways and her bronchial tubes are inflamed. The reason nights are so bad is because she breathes less often and more shallow so it allows more mucus build-up. So now she's on some heavier meds to use twice a day through her nebulizer. Last night was the first night of the full dosage and she ended up vomiting so we're not sure if it was an isolated event or because of the meds.

The doctor agreed that her loud raspy breathing (called stridor, fyi) is due to a soft trachea. That should just get better as she gets older. We weren't as concerned with that as the coughing so we were ok with that news.

And finally, the doctor also found a slight ear infection in her right ear which we just have to keep an eye on. She hasn't been showing any discomfort or having fevers so we're all hoping it'll just heal itself.

We go back in a month for 2 appts. One is a swallow study to check for reflux as the doc thinks she still has that and actually gave her some new meds to start taking now for that. And then the week after that we have a follow up to see how the nebulizer treatments are going. We're just happy that we have some answers and there seems to be a light at the end!
